You won't find a British party without a trifle, no matter the season or the occasion (as long as there are grandparents there). With holiday season approaching I thought I'd share my family recipe with you in case you want to add a fun British twist to your celebrations this year!

Take a clear, deep bowl (whatever size you like). Slice lady fingers in half lengthways and layer on the bottom of your bowl until you're just under 1/3 of the way up. If no kids are going to be eating the trifle it's traditional to soak the lady fingers in sherry for a couple hours first!
Cover the lady fingers with chopped fruit. I would recommend strawberries and raspberries but it's really up to you!
Make Jell-O and pour over the top until the fruit is JUST submerged. Leave to set.
Once set, add a layer of cold custard. I usually do an inch thick but some people like much more.
You can get this from your local British store or international aisle at the supermarket, pre-made stuff is in a tin and the best brand is Ambrosia. Failing that you can buy the powder version (which you just heat with milk) online here. You'll never regret buying custard and I would strongly recommend pouring it over your next apple pie!
The final layer is whipped cream, and then garnish with some more chopped fruit.
You should be able to see well defined layers through the side of the bowl - make sure you get all the way to the bottom when serving so you get a good taste of everything! Let me know what you think - and if there's an American substitution for custard I'm happy to hear about it!
